Many people appreciate the efficient, clean design of a good website. Even if you don’t consciously sit there and silently congratulate the designer on a job well done, you will still appreciate the hard work that has gone into it. You will do this through the continued exploration of that site, as you easily move from one page to the next, exploring all there is to offer from this reliable and professional company that you have found.

You will also no doubt be able to recall what you have done on the occasions where your surfing has led you to a sub-standard website. How do you feel when you find a site that is selling exactly what you want but their site design looks so amateur you hesitate in buying from them?

It’s frustrating and tempting all at the same time – and that is the reason why it’s worth spending money on a web designer. It’s one of the most important parts of web marketing, because your website is going to be online right across the world every minute of every day. You can’t afford for it to be sub-standard.

So if you are having trouble justifying the cost of a good web designer, you should shift your focus to the end result you will get. Compare that to what you would have if you tried to create a website yourself, or attempted to cut corners in any way. In the end, it is the final result that you need to think about. The more sales you want to make, the more money you should be prepared to invest up front to give the right impression.

If you are still struggling with the idea of spending money on a web designer, try putting yourself back into the position of visiting other peoples’ websites. You may be well aware that you are trustworthy and able to fulfil all the orders that come your way but the fact is that your customers do not know you. They don’t know that you won’t just disappear with their money and not send their order. You have to convince them of that – and having a professional website design is the first step towards doing that.

Of course a good website designer will also know a lot about search engine optimization and other important topics. SEO is essential to you getting found online and the right web design can be the difference between a top 100 ranking and a first page ranking. All these elements to help you position yourself higher up the search results will be integrated for you by a good designer. If you were going to create your own website, not only would it take longer but these important elements would probably not be anywhere near as well done either.

So think carefully if you are in the market for a new website. Where do you want to be in a year from now? Do you want to be struggling with a website that doesn’t look the part? Or do you want to have a website that is professional, efficient and bringing in more orders than you thought it would?

Now there’s something that not every webmaster will have thought of. There is no doubt that some websites appeal to virtually everyone. Think about sites offering information on wide ranging subjects, for example. Unless the subject in question is very much engineered to be appealing to kids, or to the elderly, or another very specific age group, the approach will be to the general population.

But this doesn’t apply in every case. And if it isn’t something that has crossed your mind yet, you might want to think about whether the design of your website is alienating some of the people you are trying to appeal to.

When you are trying to make a living online, the concept of website promotion is obviously a very important one. But if you are attracting lots of people to your website and they don’t like what they see when they get there, that is going to be time and money wasted.

What you need to do is to make sure your promotional efforts and your website match up with each other. If you are giving out the wrong messages to people they won’t hang around on your site for very long.

It’s obviously necessary to understand your audience. Do you know the type of people who come to your site frequently and enjoy browsing its pages? No matter what type of site you have, you must be able to understand who your audience is. If you do, you will be able to design your site to appeal to that audience.

So how does website design work in this sense?

Well there are a number of things you need to think about. For example, colour could be a component here. Kids will naturally be interested in bright primary colours. If they are surfing and they come across a website that is dull and grey and doesn’t look particularly interesting, they won’t hang around to see what’s on it – even if it is giving away free games consoles!

That is an extreme example, but you get the point. Online marketing is as much about making sure that final step of taking a look at your website is as successful as finding it in the first place.

All websites need an overhaul from time to time, but there’s no better time than now to take a fresh look at yours. Are you really appealing to the right people? If your audience is professional and looking for efficient and truthful information, they are likely to appreciate an efficient and functional looking website.

The more research you do in this area the better. It’s not enough to make assumptions about what your audience may or may not like. And of course you can always ask them how happy they are with your site as it stands. This will usually get you the kind of feedback that will enable you to make informed changes if they are needed, so bear it in mind.

If you have a website the chances are pretty good that you will constantly be tweaking it and playing around with it to make sure it looks as good as it possibly can for everyone who visits it.

But have you thought about what people will see if they were to access your website using their mobile phone or other similar device?

If you haven’t thought along these lines yet, you are not alone. A lot of website owners haven’t looked into it yet – and many people don’t even realise that there is a difference between a site you view on the web and a site you view on your mobile phone.

In reality there isn’t a huge difference; but if your website is mobile friendly it will simply be a lot easier to view on a small screen than it would be otherwise. There is still the assumption that everyone viewing a website will do so on a nice big computer screen, but of course that isn’t the case, and if you don’t cater for the people who surf the internet while they are out and about you may well lose out on potential customers who cannot view your site well enough to persevere with looking around it.

In a sense, having a mobile friendly website is just another form of website marketing. You need to consider the different ways in which a person will find your site and use it, and the easier you can make it for them the more chances you will have to make more sales.

So what does the future hold for mobile accessible websites? Will people really continue to access the internet in the way it has been forecast? Some people think that the mobile phone will be the most popular way of going online within the next year or two, so there is every chance that those websites that aren’t mobile friendly could end up lagging behind the rest as we all compete to get peoples’ attention on the small screen.

Of course some things won’t change. Just because a website is made to be viewed on a mobile phone just as easily as on a computer screen, that doesn’t mean you can shirk your usual search engine optimization duties, because everything else remains the same as far as finding your site in the first place is concerned.

So it will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of years. Some people thought we would all be using the internet via our mobiles already, so perhaps the forecast is slightly more optimistic than the actual picture itself will appear, but only time will tell what actually happens.

If you decide not to worry about this aspect of having a mobile friendly website, you do run the risk of being left behind if it does take off in a big way. You should always have one eye to the future and be on the cutting edge, not bringing up the rear.

Okay now be honest. Do you have copies of all your work – and do you update them regularly? What would happen now if you suddenly lost all your work, your computer crashed irretrievably or your laptop was stolen?

If you have a website or do most of your work on computer then you owe it to yourself to keep back ups of all the data you have. Even though your hosting provider may be completely secure and your website is in no danger at all of crashing or being lost, we all know that things do happen and if you don’t have back ups of anything then you run the risk of losing everything – and by that I mean your whole business.

And it’s not just a question of security either. It’s practical to keep a back up of everything because you never know when you may need it. Let’s suppose you have ten categories of goods on your website, and each category has twenty products in it. If you needed that information for web marketing to enable you to put your products on eBay as well as on your own site, it’s a lot easier to have a word document to work from that you can edit and tweak as you need to, than to copy the content from your website and use that. No matter what your website design is like, you’ll find this a tricky and frustrating option to go for – and all for saving some space on your hard drive.

The best bet is to keep more than one copy and keep them in separate places. If you have a safe, make a copy of everything and put it in there. It might sound like overkill but if you ever need it you will be glad it’s there.

It’s quite alarming how many people and businesses there are out there today, online and offline, who don’t take adequate security measures with their data. Protection is vital in any type of business and internet marketing is no different. Even if the data you are backing up has no real value in any way – that is, no one could get any profit out of it if they got hold of it themselves – that doesn’t mean it has no value and it wouldn’t cost you if you lost it.

Unfortunately, some people think of backing up only the things that have a definite monetary value completely missing the point that, if they had to re-type all their product descriptions, this would cost them a lot of time and effort. And of course, if their website was offline in the meantime, they would end up losing money anyway. Sometimes not everything is black and white.

So why not take some time out now to make sure you won’t fall victim to data loss if anything happened to your work. If something happens tomorrow, you’ll be glad you acted today.
