Why Money Spent On A Web Designer Is Money Well Spent

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Web Design

Many people appreciate the efficient, clean design of a good website. Even if you don’t consciously sit there and silently congratulate the designer on a job well done, you will still appreciate the hard work that has gone into it. You will do this through the continued exploration of that site, as you easily move from one page to the next, exploring all there is to offer from this reliable and professional company that you have found.

You will also no doubt be able to recall what you have done on the occasions where your surfing has led you to a sub-standard website. How do you feel when you find a site that is selling exactly what you want but their site design looks so amateur you hesitate in buying from them?

It’s frustrating and tempting all at the same time – and that is the reason why it’s worth spending money on a web designer. It’s one of the most important parts of web marketing, because your website is going to be online right across the world every minute of every day. You can’t afford for it to be sub-standard.

So if you are having trouble justifying the cost of a good web designer, you should shift your focus to the end result you will get. Compare that to what you would have if you tried to create a website yourself, or attempted to cut corners in any way. In the end, it is the final result that you need to think about. The more sales you want to make, the more money you should be prepared to invest up front to give the right impression.

Should Your Website Be Appealing To A Particular Age Group?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Web Design

Now there’s something that not every webmaster will have thought of. There is no doubt that some websites appeal to virtually everyone. Think about sites offering information on wide ranging subjects, for example. Unless the subject in question is very much engineered to be appealing to kids, or to the elderly, or another very specific age group, the approach will be to the general population.

But this doesn’t apply in every case. And if it isn’t something that has crossed your mind yet, you might want to think about whether the design of your website is alienating some of the people you are trying to appeal to.

When you are trying to make a living online, the concept of website promotion is obviously a very important one. But if you are attracting lots of people to your website and they don’t like what they see when they get there, that is going to be time and money wasted.

What you need to do is to make sure your promotional efforts and your website match up with each other. If you are giving out the wrong messages to people they won’t hang around on your site for very long.

Why Are So Many Websites Not Yet Mobile Friendly?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Web Design

If you have a website the chances are pretty good that you will constantly be tweaking it and playing around with it to make sure it looks as good as it possibly can for everyone who visits it.

But have you thought about what people will see if they were to access your website using their mobile phone or other similar device?

If you haven’t thought along these lines yet, you are not alone. A lot of website owners haven’t looked into it yet – and many people don’t even realise that there is a difference between a site you view on the web and a site you view on your mobile phone.

In reality there isn’t a huge difference; but if your website is mobile friendly it will simply be a lot easier to view on a small screen than it would be otherwise. There is still the assumption that everyone viewing a website will do so on a nice big computer screen, but of course that isn’t the case, and if you don’t cater for the people who surf the internet while they are out and about you may well lose out on potential customers who cannot view your site well enough to persevere with looking around it.

In a sense, having a mobile friendly website is just another form of website marketing. You need to consider the different ways in which a person will find your site and use it, and the easier you can make it for them the more chances you will have to make more sales.

Do You Back Up Regularly?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Web Design

Okay now be honest. Do you have copies of all your work – and do you update them regularly? What would happen now if you suddenly lost all your work, your computer crashed irretrievably or your laptop was stolen?

If you have a website or do most of your work on computer then you owe it to yourself to keep back ups of all the data you have. Even though your hosting provider may be completely secure and your website is in no danger at all of crashing or being lost, we all know that things do happen and if you don’t have back ups of anything then you run the risk of losing everything – and by that I mean your whole business.

And it’s not just a question of security either. It’s practical to keep a back up of everything because you never know when you may need it. Let’s suppose you have ten categories of goods on your website, and each category has twenty products in it. If you needed that information for web marketing to enable you to put your products on eBay as well as on your own site, it’s a lot easier to have a word document to work from that you can edit and tweak as you need to, than to copy the content from your website and use that. No matter what your website design is like, you’ll find this a tricky and frustrating option to go for – and all for saving some space on your hard drive.

The best bet is to keep more than one copy and keep them in separate places. If you have a safe, make a copy of everything and put it in there. It might sound like overkill but if you ever need it you will be glad it’s there.
