Are Offline Business Directories Still Worth Advertising In?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

Business directories can be a worthwhile place to promote any business, because a lot of people still rely on them to find a local business which appeals to their needs. But are offline directories still worth the effort it takes to get your details included in them?

There is no doubt that website promotion in any form is a good thing, since it will always bring businesses into contact with people who may not have been previously aware of them. But in these internet fuelled times many businesses that exist purely online and do not have an offline store at all don’t tend to think beyond the internet very often when it comes to finding new customers.

They might use pay per click advertising on a regular basis to attract new customers but the thought of checking out forms of advertising and promotion which do not involve the internet at all may not even enter their heads.

But should they really be forgotten completely? It is true to say that the vast majority of business directories that are created in book format for distributing door to door don’t contain that many internet based businesses in them – if any at all. You would certainly be hard pushed to find them on every page.

Will The Threat Of A Recession Damage Internet Businesses?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

If you read the paper or visit internet news sites with any regularity you will know that the word ‘recession’ is appearing more and more in a number of different places. The impact of that word is sometimes reduced slightly by the addition of the word ‘possible’ in front of it, although at other times you’ll see the word ‘global’ instead.

While everything seems to emanate doom and gloom at the moment, what impact would a recession have on internet businesses? Moreover, are they already feeling the impact or are they more protected than the traditional bricks and mortar businesses?

There is no doubt that consumer spending is slowing down in some countries. Worry over interest rates, the economy and the rate of inflation are partly to blame for this. Everyone is understandably being more cautious. It seems harder to make a sale at the moment, but not all internet businesses are suffering.

If a full blown recession did hit, then there is no doubt that sales online would suffer just as those in the shopping malls would. But the degree of suffering is likely to be mixed, depending on which businesses you are looking at.

Why Do Some People Succeed With Internet Marketing And Others Fail?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

For every successful internet business online today, there must be thousands that fail before they even get started. But what determines who succeeds and who doesn’t? Is it the idea behind the business, the person running it, or is it down to something else?

Internet marketing is probably the one business that everyone wants a piece of. Despite the dotcom crash of a few years back there is still much to do and a lot of money to be made online, and there are plenty of ways to do it as well.

Could that in fact be part of the problem? After all there are countless websites that offer you the opportunity to make money online. From auction sites to those that share a percentage of their advertising profits with their members, and sites that let you join for free and offer your freelance services to others, it can be rather overwhelming trying to figure out what opportunity is right for you. And then of course there is affiliate marketing and creating your own website…

So is this understandable element of indecision partly to blame for the failures that lie on either side of the information superhighway? The belief that everyone else is doing better than you can lead even the most determined person astray, as they drop what they’re doing to try and copy the success of someone else instead.

Is Web 2.0 All It’s Cracked Up To Be?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

The real news story of the past few years has undoubtedly been the explosion of Web 2.0 websites. They may come in all shapes and sizes but underneath they all have the same characteristics – namely that they are sites which allow their members to help create them. The website creators provide the structure, the ideas and the tools, and the members provide much – if not all – of the content.

This is a far cry from many websites online today, and indeed it looks to be providing something of a window into how more and more websites will operate in the future. Some sites are undoubtedly solely focused on the idea of being a Web 2.0 site, but others have taken certain aspects of it to help develop the more static site they started with.

There is no doubt that a Web 2.0 site appeals to the search engines, since it is constantly updated and new content is being added all the time by the members. It can be a case of search engine optimization made easy for the site owners. But even with all those advantages, is it really as good as some people say it is?

While the whole idea behind Web 2.0 is to link people together on a personal level and provide websites that are more interactive, there is no doubt that many marketers have exploited these sites to do a spot of internet marketing. You might have read through the terms and conditions of some of these sites and seen that they don’t allow advertising for business purposes, but that hasn’t stopped marketers being creative and using them to funnel traffic towards their own sites.

How Useful Are Internet Marketing Forums?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

If you are relatively new to the world of making money online then you might have come across the existence of internet marketing forums. These are websites that allow people with the same interests to get together and – in this case – talk about the idea of making money online. How to do it, what programs to promote, how to promote them… the list is endless, and it gets longer with every site you visit.

But are they worth bothering with? Are they an indispensable tool to help you develop your online business, or is it simply a case of a lot of people getting together and swapping remarks (sometimes not very civil) with each other?

A lot depends on the forum you visit. Some of them are quite widely known online, while others struggle to make much of an impression at all. There is no doubt that some forums contain plenty of good advice and information that is well worth reading, but the problem is it can take you a long time to separate the wheat from the chaff and find the good stuff amongst the bad.

It is often said that if you want to find out what people think about a specific subject you should go to a forum that deals with it to see what people are saying. This applies just as much to web marketing as it does to anything else, but the difference with this particular type of forum is that they tend to be full of people who have some experience of online business already.

Will Traditional Publishers Eventually Meet Their Demise?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

If you know anything at all about book publishing you’ll know that getting a mainstream book publisher to even look at you is virtually unheard of. If you want them to actually read your book that’s another matter entirely.

So it’s not surprising that so many people are looking towards self publishing as a viable way to get into print. And thanks to the internet – coupled with the wonderful existence of Print On Demand technology – you don’t even have to risk hundreds or even thousands of dollars of your own money any more either.

It’s becoming more common for first time authors not to consider approaching mainstream publishers at all. The wealth of opportunities available to them online now is such that they can join a website (for free), upload their book using the software and systems provided (also usually for free) and be selling electronic copies of their books just hours after they first signed up.

Anyone who points out that the authors have to give a certain proportion of the proceeds from each book to the website that is hosting it obviously hasn’t encountered the royalty structure of any major publishing house lately. The princely sums offered there will rarely scrape into double figures, which makes the 65% or so that authors get from many sites online to be quite a heady profit by comparison.

Will E-Books Ever Take Over From Hard Copies?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

Online publishing is going from strength to strength and people who have always wanted to see their name in print can now do it without the hassle of having to get a publisher interested first.

But lots of entrepreneurs are bypassing the idea of publishing a book in hard copy form and instead they are releasing it as an e-book.

The advantages of this for both the entrepreneur and the customer are obvious. Firstly because there are no hard copies there is nothing to mail out, no costs involved in getting the books printed, and a system can be set up whereupon the e-book is delivered automatically as soon as valid payment is received.

The biggest draw for the customer is instant delivery. They can literally read the sales page, make their payment and be reading the e-book in just a few short minutes from the time they decided to buy it. This benefit is virtually guaranteed to bring in more impulse sales because all the barriers that prevent people from buying it are taken away.

But while the e-book definitely has its audience and is selling hundreds of thousands of copies all over the world, will it ever completely take over from the trusty hardback?

Will Mobile Marketing Really Catch On?

posted by Alex Cleanthous in Internet Marketing

It’s touted to be the next best thing in the world of the internet. Just imagine being able to enjoy a coffee in a restaurant and browsing the internet on your mobile phone at the same time.

But that is the problem. How many people really do imagine doing just that?

A lot of it depends on the type of phone you have. More and more mobile companies are coming up with better handsets to allow people to browse the internet more easily, but unless you have the latest options you aren’t likely to be able to get the best benefits from mobile browsing.

And how many people actually want to be browsing on their mobile anyway? True, it does have its uses – for example if you’re out and about and you suddenly remember you should have sent an urgent email you can still do it. One suspects most people would probably use it to see whether they won that item they placed a bid on courtesy of eBay.

It’s easy to see why some websites are making themselves mobile friendly in order to be seen as often as possible by people who aren’t even anywhere near an actual computer.
